What You Need to Know About Abortion Pill Reversal

pregnant woman curious about abortion

You may have heard of Abortion Pill Reversal (APR). This protocol can potentially allow a woman who has taken mifepristone to continue her pregnancy.

As with any protocol, the facts matter. If you are considering Abortion Pill Reversal, keep reading to learn more. The Abortion Pill Rescue Network can help you find a provider to administer this protocol.

Cleburne Pregnancy Center can help you understand APR and your unique circumstances. You are not alone. Contact us today to get started.

1. The hormone used in APR has supported pregnancies for decades.

During APR, doses of progesterone are given to try to counteract the effects of mifepristone. Mifepristone is the first drug in the abortion pill regimen, and it blocks this hormone, causing the pregnancy to detach and end.

When progesterone is taken orally, vaginally, or by injection, it can potentially outnumber and outcompete the effects of mifepristone. It has been used to support pregnancies and lessen the risk of miscarriage for over 50 years.

One study found that progesterone, when administered intramuscularly, helped pregnancies continue in 64% of cases. Thus, it can be an effective way of “reversing” the effects of mifepristone.

2. APR is a time-sensitive protocol.

APR’s success rate decreases the longer you wait to begin the protocol. It works best when started within 72 hours of taking mifepristone.

Timing is crucial in this process. If you’ve taken mifepristone and are experiencing second thoughts, speaking with an APR provider is essential. If you act quickly, you may be able to continue your pregnancy.

3. You are not eligible for APR if you’ve taken mifepristone and misoprostol.

APR is not an option if you’ve already taken misoprostol, the second drug in the abortion pill regimen. Misoprostol causes uterine contractions that expel the pregnancy and tissue from the uterus.

Receiving doses of progesterone will not prevent these uterine contractions and the cramping and bleeding that result.

However, if you’ve just taken mifepristone and want to begin APR, help is available.
