Can a Pregnancy Test Be Wrong?

If you’re facing an unexpected pregnancy, taking a pregnancy test can feel like a huge moment. Whether you see a positive result or a negative one, it’s completely normal to wonder if the test is accurate. You may even feel confused if your symptoms don’t match what the test says.

At Cleburne Pregnancy Center, we provide free, confidential pregnancy testing and support in a caring environment. If you have questions about your results, schedule an appointment today. Our advocates are here to help you take the next step with clarity.

How Pregnancy Tests Work

Pregnancy tests detect a hormone called hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin). Your body begins producing hCG after a fertilized egg implants in the uterus. In the earliest stages of pregnancy, hCG levels are still very low and rise gradually over time.

That’s why timing matters. Testing too early, using a test incorrectly, or misunderstanding the instructions can sometimes lead to results that feel confusing or even inaccurate.

What Causes a False-Positive Pregnancy Test?

A false-positive result happens when a test shows positive even though you are not currently pregnant. This is uncommon, but it can occur.

One possible reason is a very early pregnancy loss, sometimes called a chemical pregnancy. In this situation, the pregnancy begins, and hCG is produced, but the pregnancy stops developing very early. Since hCG may stay in the body for a short time afterward, the test can still show positive.

In rare cases, other factors may also influence results, including fertility medications that contain hCG or certain hormonal changes in the body.

Why a False-Negative Can Happen

A false-negative result is more common. This occurs when you are pregnant, but the test shows negative.

The most frequent reason is testing too soon, before hCG has built up enough to be detected. Drinking large amounts of water before testing can also dilute your urine, making hCG harder to detect. Using an expired test or reading results outside the recommended time window can also affect accuracy.

For the most reliable results, it’s usually best to test one to two days after a missed period, using first-morning urine.

Why Follow-Up Matters

A home pregnancy test can be a helpful first step, but it can’t give you the full picture. If you’re unsure about your results or still don’t feel like yourself, follow-up testing is important.

At Cleburne Pregnancy Center, our medical team can help confirm your results, answer your questions, and provide support in a calm and confidential setting. We are also available to walk with you, listen, and help you sort through what comes next.
