Understand Why Your Period Might Be Late
A late period does not always mean you are pregnant. There are other factors that can affect your cycle, such as:
- Stress
- Weight gain or loss
- Illness
- Hormonal imbalances
- Anovulation
- Exercise changes
If you have recently had unprotected sex, pregnancy may also be a possibility. If you are not getting a period at all, or if it is irregular, talk with your OB/GYN about potential causes.
When You Should Take a Pregnancy Test
An at-home pregnancy test should be taken one day after your missed period, as this allows enough time for hCG (the hormone responsible for pregnancy) to rise to detectable levels. It should also be taken with the first morning urine.
Testing too early could lead to a false negative. If your pregnancy test is negative and your period still hasn’t arrived after one week then repeat testing is recommended.
After a positive pregnancy test result, the next step would be to get an ultrasound, which will give you important medical information surrounding the location of the pregnancy, the viability, and how far along you are.
If you have found out that you are unexpectedly pregnant, we understand how shocked you must be. Take time to process how you feel and reach out for support when you are ready. We are here to help answer questions and provide information about your options.
