Ectopic pregnancy is a condition in which a fertilized egg implants and starts to grow outside of the uterus, most commonly in the fallopian tubes. Ectopic pregnancies are not viable pregnancies and are extremely dangerous when left untreated.
What causes an ectopic pregnancy?Â
While ectopic pregnancies can be random and unrelated to other conditions, according to Mayo Clinic, ectopic pregnancies may be more likely to occur under the following circumstances:Â
- Previous ectopic pregnancies
- Inflammation or infection, including STIs/STDsÂ
- Fertility treatments
- Tubal surgery
- Use of an IUD
- Smoking
Can ectopic pregnancies be moved to the uterus?Â
Ectopic pregnancies are nonviable pregnancies and cannot survive or be moved to the uterus. Because the developing tissue can cause life-threatening bleeding, it’s essential to seek treatment as soon as possible. Depending on your condition, treatment may involve medication or surgery to remove the tissue.
How do I know if I have an ectopic pregnancy?Â
Unfortunately, ectopic pregnancy can have similar signs to that of pregnancy, such as a missed period, breast pain, or nausea. Ectopic pregnancies will also typically result in a positive pregnancy test due to the hormones present.
However, some early signs that may indicate pregnancy complications, including ectopic pregnancy include vaginal bleeding and pelvic pain. As the ectopic pregnancy continues to develop, you run the risk of the fallopian tube rupturing. If this happens, you may experience severe abdominal pain, dizziness, or shoulder pain.
After a positive pregnancy test, it’s important to rule out ectopic pregnancy through an ultrasound scan. An ultrasound scan should be used to determine the viability and location of your pregnancy.
