Facing an unexpected pregnancy is stressful. Facing it with an abusive partner is impossible. Your safety and the safety of your pregnancy are top priorities. No one has the right to abuse or hurt you physically or emotionally.
If you’re in immediate danger, call the National Domestic Abuse Hotline at (800) 799-SAFE (7233). Alternatively, contact the Cleburne Pregnancy Center at (817) 641-7741 for referrals to local services that can help protect you.
Being pregnant with an abusive partner can be scary and cause a lot of unknowns, but there are steps you can take to help ensure your safety.
Recognize the Signs of Abuse
It seems like it should be obvious, but abuse can take many forms. The National Domestic Abuse Hotline lists common signs of abusive behavior. Here are a few of them:
- Telling you that you never do anything right.
- Showing extreme jealousy of your friends or time spent away.
- Preventing you from spending time with others.
- Insulting, demeaning, or shaming you.
- Preventing you from making your own decisions.
- Controlling finances.
- Pressuring you to have sex or perform sexual acts you’re uncomfortable with.
- Intimidating you through threatening looks or actions.
- Hurting your other children or pets.
Finding a Safe Place
Having an abusive partner is often emotionally complex. Maybe your partner isn’t abusive all of the time, and you hold on to the hope that things will get better. Or maybe your partner is abusive most of the time, but you depend on them for housing, food, etc., and don’t know how to leave.
Know that your emotions and experiences are real and valid. Don’t make excuses for your abuser because abuse of any kind is never okay. Protect yourself by finding a safe place to stay.
If you are currently living with your abuser, we can assist you with referrals and resources for safe housing. If you are not living with them, but they are regularly harassing you, it may be necessary to get a restraining order against them.
Confide in Someone You Can Trust
You need others on your side. You can choose a family member, friend, doctor, or clergyman. We are also available to provide protection and friendship.
Once you are away from your partner, never see them alone. Meet in a public place, if necessary, to ensure he can’t become abusive.
Have a Backup Plan
It’s essential to put a safety plan in place. Ensure you have the necessary funds and documents if you need to move quickly. The documents include your Social Security card, a passport, credit cards, and banking information. If you have children, include their Birth Certificates.
Have these stored in a safe place. If you don’t have the documents or can’t properly hide them, you can get replacements. If possible, you will also want to pack an emergency suitcase with extra clothes and toiletries. Leave the suitcase at a friend’s or family member’s home.
