Know Your Rights as a Pregnant Student

If you attend a public school, college, or a private school that receives federal funds, you are protected under Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, which prohibits discrimination based on pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions.

Here’s what that means for you:

  • Your school cannot penalize you for being pregnant or for pregnancy-related absences.
  • You must be allowed to continue participating in classes, clubs, sports, honors courses, and other activities just as you did before.
  • Medically necessary absences, including prenatal appointments and recovery from childbirth, must be excused, and you must be given the chance to make up missed work.
  • When you return, you should regain the same academic and extracurricular status you held before you left.

Communicating early with professors or advisors and documenting necessary accommodations can make managing school during pregnancy more manageable. If challenges arise, your school’s Title IX Coordinator can advocate on your behalf.

Support and Well‑Being

Pregnancy affects everyone differently. Between finals, holiday obligations, and physical changes, it’s normal to feel stretched thin. Ensuring you’re resting and eating well can help you feel more energetic and less stressed.

Emotional support matters too; connecting with friends, family, or a counselor can make this time feel more manageable.
