Abortion, whether medical or surgical, is a serious procedure, and understanding the potential risks and steps involved is essential. Talking with a nurse can help you assess your personal risk given your health history.

At Cleburne Pregnancy Center, we offer free and confidential consultations with experienced nurses who provide medically accurate information and compassionate support. Schedule your appointment today.

Abortion: An Overview

Medical abortion (the abortion pill) is FDA-approved for up to 10 weeks of pregnancy and involves two drugs, mifepristone and misoprostol, to end and expel a pregnancy through abdominal cramping and vaginal bleeding.

Surgical abortion is performed in a clinic or hospital by an abortion provider. An abortion provider dilates your cervix, then manually ends and removes the pregnancy with a mixture of surgical instruments, suction, and scraping.

Both procedures carry risks, but your personal health history plays a significant role. For instance, do you have an untreated STI, a specific medical condition, or an allergy that increases your risks? You’ll want to discuss all of this with a nurse.

Why a Nurse Consultation Is Medically Essential

When you speak with a nurse at Cleburne Pregnancy Center, they will provide pregnancy testing, an ultrasound, and STI testing to do the following:

  • Confirm gestational age:
Accurately knowing how far along you are, determined through ultrasound, is important for understanding which options are available and safe.
  • Rule out ectopic pregnancy:
Sometimes, an ectopic pregnancy (1-2% of pregnancies) develops outside the uterus and requires immediate medical care. The abortion pill will not treat an ectopic pregnancy. This can be detected with an ultrasound.
  • Reviewing your medical history:
Certain health conditions or medications can make abortion unsafe. A nurse can help identify any contraindications or personal risks associated with abortion.
  • Explaining how a medical abortion works:
A nurse can explain the purpose of each drug, what to expect physically, and what symptoms require urgent attention.
  • STI Testing and treatment:
Cleburne tests for chlamydia and gonorrhea, which protects your health no matter what option you’re considering. Having an STI during an abortion raises the risk of developing pelvic inflammatory disease (PID).
  • Answering your questions
If you have any questions or concerns, talking with a medical professional can help you get answers and consider your choices.
