Adoption
Adoption entails continuing your pregnancy, giving birth, and placing your child with an adoptive family. As the birthmother, you can select the adoptive parents and level of communication you wish to have with your child.
You may choose adoption if you want to continue your pregnancy but do not want to parent your child. With this option, you create an adoption plan that outlines your goals and preferences for this experience.
As the birth mother, you can select the adoptive family you’d like for your child and determine how much contact you want to have. Or you can choose to keep your identity completely confidential and forgo contact with the family.
Some women find adoption to be emotionally difficult. It is crucial to understand the resources and support available if you decide to place your child for adoption.
What Adoption Plans Are Available?
You are in total control of the process. By working with an adoption agency, you can carefully consider what you want the adoption plan to look like. Every woman will have different preferences for their future.
Three adoption plans are available, and each offers a different level of communication and involvement.
Open Adoption
Open adoptions are the most common in the United States. You select the adoptive family for your child and establish a relationship with them. You and your child can communicate through letters, phone calls, or visits.
Semi-Open Adoption
With a semi-open adoption, you’ll still have contact with your child. However, all contact occurs through a third party, like an adoption attorney or agency. You and the adoptive family will receive limited information about each other (i.e., first names and general locations).
Closed Adoption
Closed adoptions offer the highest level of privacy. With this plan, you will not have a relationship with the adoptive family, and your identities will remain anonymous.
Women may choose this plan if they have safety concerns or do not wish to be in contact with the child.
What Will Adoption Cost Me?
You do not pay for adoption services if you choose this option. Your medical and legal expenses will also be covered, and you may be entitled to additional financial, material, and emotional support.
