Post-Abortion Support
Every woman has a different abortion experience. If you are struggling emotionally after the procedure, help is available.
Every woman reacts differently to an abortion procedure. Some women feel relieved and at peace, while others struggle weeks, months, or even years afterward.
It can feel difficult and uncomfortable to ask for help, especially if you’re unsure of what’s available. Know that there is hope. You don’t have to suffer in silence, and you can find healing.
Is What I’m Feeling “Normal”?
There’s no way to predict with certainty how you’ll feel after an abortion. However, we know that some women experience adverse mental health effects like anxiety, depression, and grief after an abortion procedure.
Certain factors can increase the likelihood of these effects occurring, including:
- Personal, religious, or cultural beliefs about abortion
- Maternal desires
- Having faced outside pressure to abort
- Preexisting mental health issues
If you are wrestling with the emotional effects of an abortion procedure, know that other women have been in your situation. You are not alone, and there is a way forward.
Healing is Possible
While healing takes time and effort, it is possible.
There are several ways to begin your post-abortion healing journey:
- Professional Counseling: Speaking with a therapist trained in post-abortion recovery can help you determine tools and coping mechanisms to process your abortion and improve your mental health.
- Support Groups: Finding community with those who have been in your shoes can help you find hope. These individuals know what you are going through and feeling.
- Self-Care Activities: Journaling, meditation, exercise, and engaging in activities you enjoy won’t undo what you’ve experienced. However, they can reintroduce positive emotions into your life, help you articulate your feelings, and more.
Cleburne Pregnancy Center offers post-abortion support through a Bible study program called “Surrendering the Secret.” We provide individual grief counseling with limited availability and community referrals for counseling.
